Hazel M. Stewart was born in 1921, so she is about age 16-20 when she keeps this diary. She probably lived in the town of Brush in Morgan County, Colorado (about an hour northeast of Denver). The diary is of the “Five Year” type, with entries for the same day over five years on each page.

I went to the New Years dance at Brush armory - hitched hiked from Brush to home got ride with Donass, Wheelers, George Walters Jr. Washed clothes, dishes, etc.

Got prepared for school played seven up all afternoon played pinochle from 7:30 to 11:00 and eat cold milk & cookies

Went to school 9 noon peg, red, & I went to town talked to Cole Wilson went to town later with Esther W. & Margaurite Redees. Played rummy at home

Carried out my schedule to-day I took a bath & washed my hair - played pitch & rummy. I sure wished I had a new pair of shoes.

Missed the bus, went to Town after dinner eat candy till I was filling [?] sent to sears for two dresses played rummy with Dad, Mom, Bill, & Harry

Went to school - Frances started talking to me again. I finished reading Tom Sawyer never got to play cards.

Went to school - studied for examinations - went to bed early so I would feel good to take exams tomorrow (I hope I pass Eng.)

Went to school took two tests in the morning walked around town all the rest of the day till 3:30 discovered a pimple on my back Played rummy & pinochle

Went to school - took Home Ec. test walked around town with Alta Johnson started to make blouse for home Ec. project played pinochle. Heard I’ll get bad name if I don’t quit running around with certain people.

Stayed home - no fun= made candy made banana scallops tasted awful. Read awhile & played pitch. Im undecided of what to do. I wish I would get a new pair shoes

Didnt get the sunday paper - made me mad helped Dad to-day so he might give me money to get shoes with now I’m afraid to ask him. Played rummy & won two pieces of candy

Went to school - eat at the school house went to town to buy shoes couldnt find none I liked. Worked on blouse till 12:30 - a home project thats due to-morrow

Went to school - bought me a pair of brown shoes. Got two dresses from Sears don’t like one of them. Played cards after supper with Harry, Dad, & Ma, I won the candy.

Went to school ran a mile to catch bus as it came out from Wetzbarger’s and found it hadn’t come yet. Played cards I wished I could see “Love & Kisses”

Went to school - didn’t fill good watched girls tumble for demonstration criticized them all stayed with peg and got to see Love & Kisses I was invited to go to T & T party

Went to school - saw a electricity demonstration - ditched date to t & t? party with Leslie Shoder - played cards with mom & dad I won two pieces of candy - my big toe hurts

Went with Easther Wetzbarger to hunt ice found some that wasn’t frozen hard enough went horseback riding and I’m sore. Played pitch, warshed hair read love book.

Read Sunday paper warshed up played cards. Dan, Bickards hired man was up. Tried to solve 2 puzzles - got changed and didn’t fill a bit good told fortune and read

Didn’t get up till 11:00 cause I didn’t feel good so I stayed home from school. I read all day, the wind blew all day yesterday & to-day wished it would stop.
P.S made apple pie to-day, also cut hand

Went to school, met a girl named Litea Miller. Played cards after supper with Dad, Ma, Billie, Harry, & Dan. Made candy finished reading “Call of the Wild”

Went to school- nothing new happened went to library & town tried to get my English - also got report card never flunked anything I discovered I had a tooth ache (hurts)

Went to school at noon got excused to go to Sterling but instead went with Easther home. Played pinochle with Dan, Bill, & Dad. Harry’s leg hasnt even started to get well the bone is not to-gether.

Went to school saw a picture of parts of tractors etc almost went to sleep. Played cards with mom & Dad. Billie was going skating but didn’t

Saturday again and no place to go stormed all day. Played cards and read old love book I wished something would happen this is such a dull life.

Stayed home and played cards all day. Made three layer cake and some good icing got prepared for school Jake Bickard, Dan, Ralph Grace & Jeremy Scott.

Went to school last period Esther & I went to town. Played cards with Dan, dad, & ma got ready for box social thats to-morrow night. Made frosting for cakes but it wouldn’t get hard

Stayed home and washed and ironed my clothes for next week. Went to bed early. I wished something thrilling & Romantic would happen HA. HA. (got a letter from Rosalie)

Got up Made ice cream. Dan came up then Rosalie, Betty, Gene, Stewart, & Frances came from Denver stayed awhile and then took Mom back with them. [she is?] having a time.

Went to school at noon went up town with Esther. Esther Boston started talking to me. Went to town last period with Alta & Esther. Bought suckers. Littea & I talked all the way home. I worked.

Went to school went to public library at 3:00 I owe Red’s mother 50¢ and I havent got 50¢ so what will I do. I made jello and cake and did the work. I hope Ma is enjoying herself.

Went to school - tried to type with the noiseless remington but it seemed to make a lot of noise & I didn’t know how it worked I was used to a Royal. Played cards with Billie, Dad, & Ben.

Went to school didn’t get to pay Evelyn back the fifty cents. I thought mom would come home to-day but she didn’t.

Went to school, just about didn’t. Saw a picture show about “a world tour on [bread?].” It was at the grade school. Payed Evelyn back the 50¢

I cleaned up the house about gave up mom’s coming home. When in come mom, Gene, Rosalie, Bill, and Betty. Went to picture show

Read funnies & played with Betty Gosh but she’s so sweet, she can’t talk very plain yet but she makes herself understood.

I was sick so I didn’t go to school. Read Love & Romance. True story and everything else. If everything goes right we’ll soon have electricity.

Went to school. It was cold & snowed I also need more true stories I don’t like them. Went up town at noon bought some shoe polish & candy I thought I’d freeze before I got back.

Went to school nothing happened. Oh yes I went to a demonstration on liquid and it was interesting and funny.

Went to school, heard a talk on liquid and it was very interesting. Made cookies

Stayed home did up the work. Started to look for [Indian relics but never found anything.

Went to school payed typing dues. Went to library with Alta Johnson then up town. Cut my foot & leg when a old cow jerked a barb wire that had cought on my leg.

Went to school. Thelma [Lanskey?] tried to explain why she had a tough name. I gave her the horse laugh. Did my lessons went to bed.

Went to school at 3:00 went to library and at noon I went up town read awhile curled my hair.

Went to school. At noon Esther and I played hookey and walked out to the hospital to see Edith Hunt. Got back just in time to catch bus

Stayed home cleaned the house and read. I wished I could go to the junior play at the picture show, “checkers”

Cleaned homes in the morning. In the afternoon Geneva and Nellie Wetzbarger came up and got me to go to ball game played softball. Hall’s, Vondys, Petersons, June Morton, Charles Pointer, Millers, Wetzbargers.

Went to school - went to library at three. When Alta and I asked Swein our study hall teacher to go he said we whispered and caused him a lot of trouble and then asked a favor. Made cherry pie. Bill and I played. Alta came up after the game.

Went to school I was so stiff from playing ball Sunday I could hardly walk. I’m still wishing I could see the junior play “Me him and I or checkers with Jane Withers.

Went to school went to town at noon with Alta Johnston at 3:00 we asked the S.H. teacher to go to library and he said sure he was glad to get rid of us.

Went to school at noon I went home with Eveleen when started book to school I met Alta as we played hookey. We watched around and had a swell time. And did we see a handsome boy.

Stayed home: received a letter from Rosalie they may come home to-morrow washed windows and ironed dresses and curtains. I was going to take bath but changed my mind

Rosalie, Bill, Betty, and Gene came and went to picture show Joe E. Brown in Wide Open Faces and Dare Devil Drivers they were sorta good.
