An die Einwohner von Colorado Springs im Jahre 2001.

Ich kam im Jahre 1899 hierher und fand eine im Aufblühen begriffene Stadt vor, deren Bewohner im Bewusstsein der Vorzüge des Erdreiches und des Klimas alles taten um die Entwicklung der Stadt zu beschleunigen.

Ich bin Augenarzt von Beruf und fand tüchtige Augenärzte (4 an der Zahl), ich interessiere mich für Musik und traf tüchtige Musiker, ich treibe Frühsport und half einen Säbel- und Florett-Club begründen.

Keine Betätigung des Menschengeistes - auf welchem Gebiet sie auch immer sei - war diesen Leuten fremd, sie versuchten sich in allen Künsten, Wissenschaften und Sports, die man in der alten Welt treibt.

Es ist allerdings ein etwas unsicheres Herumtasten in den verschiedensten Gebieten, nicht recht gründlich und wenig zielbewusst, aber die Anfänge sind gemacht, und die Absicht ist unverkennbar, in die Tiefe zu gehen und das Warum der Dinge zu erforschen. Ich denke, dass nach einem Jahrhundert voller Arbeit und Werbens die Nachkommen der jetzigen Generation herausgefunden haben werden, wo der Schwerpunkt im Können eines jeden liegt, und er ist außer dem Bereiche der Möglichkeit zu sagen, zu welchen Zielen der Fortschritt in Colorado Springs dann geführt haben wird.

Mit einiger Besorgnis erfüllt mich der allzu sehr auf Äußerlichkeiten - wie Kleidung etc. - gerichtete Sinn der Jugend und einige schlechte Gebräuche, wie der Genuss starker Alkoholika und das übertriebene Zigaretten rauchen.

Auch der Geist der dieser Generation den Spottnamen der „obedient parents" gegeben hat, ist kein Segensbrief.

Die Frauen und Mädchen sind tugendhaft und frei von vielen der Vorurteile, an denen ihre Schwestern jenseits des Ozeans, anscheinend unheilbar, kranken.

Der scharfe Geschäftssinn der Männer ist unübertroffen und scheint mir unübertrefflich. Er ist eine gute Gewähr für das Fortleben des Gedankens unserer Zeit. -

Ich schreibe diese Zeilen in Deutsch, meiner Muttersprache, um Euch zu einer Vergleichung der Schriftsprache unseres Jahrhunderts mit Euerer anzuregen.

Colorado Springs, August 4th 1901

To the inhabitants of Colorado Springs in the year 2001.

I came here in the year 1899 and found a city in the process of blossoming, a city whose inhabitants, aware of the qualities of the geography and climate, were doing everything to accelerate the development of the city. I am an eye doctor by profession and found excellent eye doctors (4 in number), I am interested in music and found excellent musicians, I am a fencer and helped found a saber-and-foil club. No activity of the human spirit-regardless of the area-was foreign to these people; they had experience in all the arts, sciences and sports which are practiced in the old world [i.e., Europe]. There is, however, a rather shaky groping about in the various areas, not very thorough or systematic, but the beginnings are there, and the intention to pursue them in depth and to get to the bottom of things is unmistakable. I believe that after a century of work and effort the descendants of the present generation will have found out where the strong points in the abilities of each individual lie, and it is beyond the realm of the possible to say to which goals progress in Colorado Springs will have led. I am somewhat worried about the young people's exaggerated concern with externals, like clothing, etc., and about some bad habits, like the enjoyment of strong alcoholic beverages and excessive smoking of cigarettes. Also the spirit which has given this generation the sarcastic name of "obedient parents" is no blessing. The women and girls are virtuous and free of many of those prejudices which apparently incurably ail their sisters across the ocean. The keen business sense of the men is unsurpassed and seems to me to be unrivalled. It is a good guarantee for the survival of the thinking of our time.

I am writing these lines in German, my mother tongue, in order to stimulate you to compare the written language of our century to yours.
