Helen Hunt Jackson Papers, Part 2, Ms 0156, Box 2, Folder 24h, Francis
Parkman to HHJ, 1881. 50 Chestnut St. My dear Mrs. Jackson, I do not recall any history of the missions of the Pacific coast. In the Jesuit collection, Lettres Edifiantes et Curieuses, there is no doubt something on that region. Clavigero, Storia della California, contains a pretty full account of the missions of the Jesuits. Also in Historie Chretienne de la California (Paris 1253) There is something about them and the other missions in Robinson, Life in California, and in Forbes's California. Davis, The Spanish Conquest of New Mexico, a book of merit, may give incidental information. (Doylestown, Pa 1869) Your book is an honest and valuable record of a scandalous and shameful page in the history of the American people - for the blame lies with them in the last report. I am glad it is written, and think it likely to do good. Yours very truly, F. Parkman Mrs. Wm. S. Jackson. |
