Tues morning 27. - Chambermaid with a candle. No 47 - Breakfast. - Stage at six. - Irish woman. " man. - Mr. Russell - merchant & lawyer - Fine scenery on entering the mountains - Mud! - Somerset - County town court week - D. his constituents on the portico! - Conveniences in the chamber. - Keeping stage waiting. - Ride to West Newton. - ----- ----- on the outside of the stage - Jerks! - Tea - Fire in the grate - Fat landlady - Maple molasses - Ride from West Newton - all night - Wheeling at 7.

Wed. morning 28 - ----- House. The worst Hotel in the U.S. of A. - Dirty - old - smoky - filled with horrible people. - Wheeling - anL-a-n-d- English manufacturing town in a cloud of smoke - forlorn as conceivable - dirty - poor cooking. Slept all the forenoon - went to dinner at one. - passed the Pm. in melancholy reflections - (Mr. P.s room - unmade bed - ricketty washstand - broken pitcher - one window dirty looking out into a blank yard - two holes ----- over the window - out doors! - An old grate - large - bricks all crumbling out around it - ceiling cracked & gone in spots - floor carpeted with a strip of oiled cloth - striped carpet - figured do - & then plain boards - one chair - a pennys worth of looking glass! - Left Wheeling at 9 o'clock Wed. eve. in the boat Cincinnati. - Mailed a letter for Jennie Abbott. -

Thurs. 29. - On the Ohio - clear pleasant day. - Rafts - shingle rafts - Coal scows! filled by little cars running down from the hills to the river - Pomeroy - Sheffield - Buckeye tree. - Steep banks - peculiar arrangements for landing - Sheffield Landing "waited for the pigs to be Killed" (Mr. P.) Steerage passengers - Mulatto woman & little girl - husband a waiter at Table - western bridal couple - fine looking man young - tall - strong - frank - dressed in wedding suit - black with white vest. - she dressed in a changeable blue & gold silk - with a huge cape trimmed with blue fringe - white straw hat with just a cape of blue ribbon - Muslin undersleeves and ragged dark cotton gloves - quit a pretty innocent looking girl - small - red hair & a little freckled -
Sat out doors all the forenoon - after dinner tried to sleep - too warm - sat out again till night. - reached Cincinnati before light Friday morn 30. - Rested all day - (Burnett House - fine house._ - Heavy thunder & hail storm in the afternoon. Letter from Jennie Fox. - Thunder storm in the evening - vivid lightning. -

May 1. - Clear pleasant day - Mr. Converse from Boston - Rode out to Walnut Hills - Lane Seminary - (called on Annie Tyler - ) Theological student playing ball - ------- view from the top of the college building: (ascensus difficicile!) - Mr. Auburn - Picnic in the woods - "Straights grove." - Little guide - Mr. Pine & Lady - Swings - Spring beauties - Teeter with the Dean! - Charming country residences - Clifton - Clifton chapel - view of Spring Grove Cemetery - "Creek running up" - (N.B. Sunday May 2. - Beautiful day. No letters! Hear Mr. Fuher in the morning. - staid at home & tried to write in the afternoon & evening. - Mailed a letter for Jennie Fox. No letters!

Mon. 3. Not clear.. Mr Converse left - Wrote & read all the morning - no letters. - Annie Tyler - Cathedral - (Mr. & Mrs. Day.) - Archbishop Purcell - Statuary - Confessional - Governor Moreheads lecture in the evening - Mr Lupton the Pres. of the association - Annie spent the night.

Tues. 4. - Beautiful day - headache - (from talking all night.) House in progress. - - Medical College - burlesque and the Smithsonian - Professors house to match. -
(Bordering to the paper - Incongruous -) Foolish foolish
- Pm. called at Mr. Chanys - started at 5 for Cincinnati. - Rev James Freeman Clark & Lady -
- Toothpick from the State Prison Convict to Mr. C. - Mr Brown the paper ejected from his pan by Democrats. - (Weighed in the street - 120 ½.) - Supper at Xenia. Returned Cincinnati at eleven. Letters! Annie - Mary Sprague - Jennie Abbott - E.B. H. - Read till one o'clock. -

Friday 7. - By great efforts landed in ------fasting at 9! - Found that we must be all parked at 10 ½ - nearly distracted - accomplished it - sat with bonnets on waiting till 11. - went on board the boat Ben Franklin & waited one hour - Beautiful day... - Steamboat manners at table - Dress - black & blue plaid trimmed with pink & green frings! - (Bridal couple in the cars coming from Columbus - bride - blue & gold silk - black wrists - white straw, white ribbon - white silk gloves - white sash.) - Wrote to Annie in the afternoon
- Little Black girl - Topsy - green calico dress cut down for her - ragged - deep pocket - broken side combs - supple - gestures - singing - Louisa - lives with Mr Grundy - the preacher - belongs to his brother. -

(Eleven Hills -) - Mr. Grundy lives at Frederiksburg - Mr. Riggs at Lebanon owns her mother & sister - and one sister & two brothers live at - Kept James Edward from going on to the Pike - knows knives & ----- pavements. - Has been up to Mr. G's to nursee his baby ---- since last summer - Baby a year old now - liked taking care of him better at the last, because he could walk - before he was "heavy to pack" - Rainbow - "A money purse full of money at the end of it" - brother "started for the end of it once" - went as far as the hill . - knows A.B.Cs & abs - no more - did not know her age "mother knows" -

Sat. 8. - Clear day - Mammoth Cave given up! feminine expedient of support. My life under all circumstances - Wrote - Rev. E. Humphrey & Lady. - Mailed a letter for E.B.H. in the evening. - Thermometer 80.

Sunday 9. Clear but warm. - Mr Shaw & daughter from Boston. - Heard Mr. Humphrey in the morning - Fair sermon - Slept in the afternoon & wrote. - Thunder Shower. - (Waiter - hair dressed like a womans - & earrings in his ears - peculiar intonating in speaking.) -

Mon. 10. - Rainy - decided very suddenly to start for St. Louis - road around the city - Sallie Wards old home. - (Greenhouse - old fashioned place.) - Groves - Locust trees in blossom, snowballs - & rose vines - "Pentecnetheca." - Went on board the Gen. Pike at 12. o'clock. - Before starting visited the Eclipse a New Orleans boat lying by side of it - Most gorgeously fitted - doors of the state rooms - stained glass - & C. - Pleasant day -
read Tylnly Hall in the first part of the P.m. - wrote after dinner. Mailed a note (& letter from Mr. P.) For E.B.H. - at Clover post. -
(Bride - blue & gold silk - trimmed with 5 flounces scalloped & bound.) Yellow neck ribbons long curls & no collar - half ribbons around her wrists. - wreath of white artificial flowers on her hair - (dark complexion - eyes & hair.) - - - -
Sat in the cabin unsociably till nine - cloudy & damp - Mr. Durkee & wife from N.Y. - Mrs Sproll - Mr. Shaw & daughter. -

Tues. 11. - Heard rain early in the morning - clear at seven - Cool - Cotton wood. -
"Have you seen e'er a young child out here - one of mine is missing" (Mr. Converse) - Pilot House - cave in the rock - going on shore & ramble in the woods - heat. - glorious scenery - Lightning in the evening - Thunder storms - Captains rum outlands - Hail storm in the night.

Wed. 12. - Clear. Pilot House again. - flowers on the banks - Round Tower - D.G Bake over - Driven down by the heat - tried to sleep - tried to write - Warm warmer warmest - Miserable night! - (Read there bro's Isa in the P.M. -

Thurs. 13 - St Louis. - arrived early in the morning - Planting House - full - no rooms for two hours - sick! -

Friday - Desolations & Misery! Mailed a note for E.B.H. & Mr. S.

Better - went down to dinner. - interesting dressmaker with long curls - traveling dress. - wrote after dinner - (Mr. Sproll.) - Mr. Converse left. - Music in the evening. Fire & thunder storm in the night (Port Wine & Breads -

Pleasant - warm - heard Mr Audryon in the morning - Fresco on the wall - corridor 300 feet long &cathedral at the end!! - Little boy before us, who would read in sermon time & uncomfortable seats. - Slept in the P.M. & wrote. - Port wine! - Wrote all the evening. - Little boy alone at the table - invalid mother - flowers.

Mon 17. Clear - cool Dressmaker at six !!!!! - Went out shopping - Mr. P. started for Quincy. Wrote P.m. & evening. - Started letter for E.B.H. - Annie - Henry Root & Susie Brooks. -


Tues. 18. - Pleasant - spent the forenoon in a fringe Store. - German girl - flowers. - Wrote after dinner - walked out - Black woman eating a radish p "A college as I understand it - where they dissect the dead" - - Wrote to Mrs. Wood & Mr Palmer in the evening. Rather lonely.

Wed. 19. - Pleasant - Letters from E.B.H. & H.D.K. - write all the morning - Suly sick.. - mailed a letter for E.B.H. - made headdress in the evening. -

Thurs. 20 - Taken at 12 Wed. night with rheumatism. - Rain. pain! - Ineffectual efforts to break the lock to Mr. P's trunk - night porter - "Screw driver!" - Suly's expedition to the druggists' - Dr. Granger. (French man. 19 years in this country. - Liberal Homopathist - Enthusiasm - power of illustration - Music & Medicine - Little fiddle & base viol! - Fever - "we put out de fire before we clare way de rubbish!" -) - called three times. - Better toward night Letter from E.B.H. - Wrote a letter to EBH. in pencil. Mr. Palmer came in evening.

Friday 21. - Cloudy. - Much better. Miss Harpers bill. - Dr. Granger - Mailed letters & journal for E.B.H. - Mr. Palmer left.

Sat. 22. Rainy - Not quite so well. Did nothing all the fore noon except write a note to Mary Sprague. - Wrote to E.B.H. in the afternoon. - Bay rum.

Sab. 23. Half pleasant. At home alone. Lonely. Wrote to E.B.H. - went down to dinner & tea.

Mon. 24. - Bright day - breakfast at 7 o'clock. Mailed a letter for E.B.H. - walked out in the afternoon - tired!

Tues. 25. - Pleasant. - Mr. Palmer returned. - Packing - Started at 5 o'clock for Peoria. - (Dr. Granger.) -
Connecticut. - Venders of light literature - Religious work (Simon McGuire Tricks upon Rivalry.") - Volume of Psalmody - Forget me not songster - Christy's Melodies & c.
Charles O'Mallery - Night scene in the cabin. Lantern - floor sleepers. - Chambermaid. -

Wed. 26. - Half pleasant - showers - warm. Sleep. - Frogs!! - Babies. - Reached Peoria at 11 ½ P.M. - Scene at the Landing - Porter of the Peoria House - didn't run any carriage - wagon coming for the baggage - Torches - sailors - whistling negro - little boy with the pipe for his mother - freight taken off the boat - coils of rope sewed for seats "given they think we all need hanging" - "We want more rope at any rate" - Cataract - sleeping negro - negro blacking boots - seat on the edge of the boat - arrival of the wagon - our trunk taken on shore - discovery that the horse was picked - waiting for another - the wagon - long cart one seat in front - slipshod looking horse - baggage - three men two girls - horse on full run! - arrived at the Peoria House 20 min to 1 - ushered through the bar room - greatted by a bark from Dog - good rooms - crackers & butter! -

Clear warm Breakfast at 10 minutes to 10!! - small square table set for three. - Ramble through the town - Broken bridge - little girl with the sand - woody dell - flfowers - side walks - mud. heat! - reached home at 12. - Mr & Mrs. Stattinius - Miss Horton - Ride - Shower - Atheists funeral - grave - spot where two murderers were hung - Mr. Hotchkiss's place - the prairie - flowers - Mr. Greenleafs - prospect - "Charlie Greenleaf - garden flowrs - Tea at Mrs. S's. - Mr & Mrs. Peters - Mr & Mrs Cooper. - (Writing medicines.-)

Sat. 29 - Breakfast at 6 - Scene from the bed - "Say - say - say" - Toilette. - Started at 7 ½ - Dined atG-e-o-r-g-e-t-o-w-n-a-l-a-i-s-N-e-w-a-r-k- Aurora - Empire House - ramble after dinner for flowers - heat - Mash - railroad track - Parted from the driver James Roberts with regret - His history - step mother - ran away at 18 - coal mine - missionaries - co------s & chickens - giving to church - dress - "Wall - I wan't raised that way -" going to New Orleans in the fall - to drive - Farmer Washburn at Vicksburgh - two daughters - rich - going to marry one!! - Started for Chicago at 5 o'clock in the cars. - pleasant ride - conductor who sprinkled the flowers - reached C. between eight & nine - Fremont House - warm bath - note to Adams' Express -

Sab. 30. - Clear - cool - Mr. Curtis - Second Presbyterian Church - windows. - Slept in the afternoon. - Heard Mr. Curtis in the evening. -

Mon. 31. Clear - cool - pleasant - long walk to a florists - Dutch woman & little boys - romantic gentleman in black with a book under his arm - tied up boughs of prairie flowers - sent them off by Adams & Co's Express - at 3 o'clock - with a note to E.B.H. - Mr. & Mrs. I.W. Chickering called. Wrote in the evening -

Tues. June 1. - Cloudy-ish - but pleasant. - Mr. Palmer started at 8 for Milwaukie - Spent the day with Mr. Chickering - ride in the evening - Walk home. - Thunder storm in the night.

Wed. 2 - Clear. Warm. - Went shopping with Mrs. C. in the forenoon. Wrote to E.B.H. - Mr. P. returned at 4 P.M - Packed.-- Mr & Mrs. C. called in the evening. Started for Detroit in theb-o-a-t-F-o-r-e-s-t-C-i-t-y- -a-t-9-o-c-l-o-c-k- -r-o-u-g-h- -r-e-a-c-h-e-d-C-l-e-v-e-l-a-n-d- cars at 9 p'clock - arrived at 10 Thurs. P.M. - 3rd - Biddle House. - slept all the forenoon - mailed a letter for E.B. H. - long walk in the evening - started for Cleveland at 9 in the boat Forest City - rough - reached Cleveland at 6 A.N. Friday 4th - Clear, cool - Letters! - Mr. John - Mary Sprague & E.B.H. - Unexpected call from Mr. John Proctor!! - Second Mail - third letter from E.B.H. - call from Dea. & Mrs. & Hattie Proctor - Suly went to walk with them - alone - read - though - & wrote - an afternoon of luxury - wrote in the evening -

Sat. 5th Clear - cool - beautiful day - wrote in the morning - long ramble in the afternoon with Mr. P. - High hill - view of Cleveland & Ohio city - river - lake - Talk about Ipswich - Mailed a letter for E.B.H. Call in the evening from John & Hattie Proctor - bored nearly out of all good nature. -

Sunday 6. - Cloudy - but not unpleasant - Orchestra rehearsing Masainello in the Morning - Dr. Aiken - Power of habit - "Harper than oil & softer than drawn swords." - wrote in the P.M call from John Proctor & Mr. Willey in the evening. -

Mon. 7. - Rainy - wrote to Mrs Ray Palmer - cold in the head - clear in the P.M. Long ride - Mr. Willey . - Took the boat at 5 P.M. for Buffalo - Buckeye - Crowd - scene with a fourth claimant to our stateroom - ! Reached B. early on

Tues. 8th - Breakfast at the Phelps House - Letters - Mr. John Henry Root - Jennie A. Josie Stiles Mrs. Wood - Mrs. Terry - & two from E.B.H. - ! Started for Niagara at 9 A.M. Crowded cars. - The falls - staircase to the ferry - rowed across - The Clifton House - carriage with Indian driver - Museum - Menagerie - conservatory - camera obscura (chem. Miss Martha K. Rugg!) - Table rock - Suspension bridge - -cial dinner - Nap in the afternoon - wrote to Mrs. Terry - visit to the curiosity shops in the evening. -

Wed. 9. Started for Buffalo at 7 - breakfast at the Phelphs House - Letter from E.B.H. - shopping - wrote to Josie Stiles & Mr. Gorham Abbott. - Started for Rochester at 5 P.M. - Wrote to E.B.H. in the evening -

Thurs. 10th Mr & Mrs. Williams - The falls - Left by the cars - scene in the Depot - Started at 11 Am. for Albany - Babies - Dinner at Syracuse - Reached A. at 9 ½ P.M. - Detention for baggage - 157 Rainbow St. - Household asleep - The Vice Presidents! -

Friday 11 - Miscellaneous forenoon - went shopping - & to see Mary Sprague - Sue Benedict -
Weighed (121 1/3!) - Mr. S. & S.B. here in the afternoon - letter from E.B.H. & package - package from Annie - wrote to Mrs. Den- & E.B.H. in the evening.

Sat. 12. Mr. Palmer & Lucy left. - Spent the whole forenoon in unpacking and arranging & c. - Walked with Mary S. in the afternoon. A call from Mrs. Wood - (The Army!) - S----- in the evening.

Sunday 13. - Clear pleasant. - Mr. James in the forenoon - Mr Cohen P.M. - wrote to E.B.H. in the evening - long talk with Mrs. Palmer

Monday 14. - E.B.H. came up in the evening. C.C. -

Tues. 15. E - paper from Irwin Fox; accident. Hot.

Wed. 16. Hotter. E. - C.C. - in the evening. -

Thurs. 17. - Mr. P. went to Poughkeepsie. E. - Mrs. Wood! - Mr. Wood. Warm!

Friday 18 Wrote to Mrs. Richardson. E. - Warm.

Sat. 19. Wrote to Charlie. Mr. P. went to N.Y. E. left in the evening. Call on Mr. S. - wrote in the evening - Mr. Story' arrival. Warm.

Sab. 20. Pleasant - hot. Mr. Story. - Wonderfulness of ------ life. - Thunder shower - Call from Mr. Wood in the evening. Long talk. -

Mon. 21. - Clear cool & pleasant - Mr. Story left. - walked to the P.O. early- mailed a letter for E.B.H. - Letters from Jennie Fox and H.D.K. - Sewed all the forenoon - Mrs Webster & Miss Goodrich - commenced a letter to E. - Mr. Palmer returned - Charlie came - Thunder storm.
