From this down to Indian rancheria in -------- river bottom - Santa Ana river - 2/3 sand - trail hard to find - paid Indians in road - riding - they told us - trail among bushes - one followed us "What are you hunting?" slow ambiance of an ------man, huts of brush - canvas - eight women ----ing curds under bush canopy - squatted - all with - - - ---- ---- ---- for filling - bundles of sticks - bright basket of one - her work basket - cabinillas - house in valley - came here to work -
Suspicious eyes on all sides - but gentle - Contrast with Riverside!

Morning with Lawson - Mr. ---- Drove to Crafton - through Redlands - Lovely spot - running water in walnut & ------ rel- - ed - rivers & bushes -orange orchard - via Craft - villainous face & voice - pretended to know all about Indians & to have done so much for them - first class hypocrite - and to ----- a cheat the Indians - few huts on his place now - is bound now to treat them better -

Drove up Cajon Pass - 18 miles to Marshalls Tavern - first eight miles through sandy plain - covered with chapparal - wild flowers - --fileria - white daisies. Yellow - & ----- ---------- ------ - "Apache Willow," - ---- stems dotted with yellow knobs of blossoms - beautiful shrub loaded with white flowers - manzanita - ---------
In canyon are farms with ----- ------ ----- ---- - wonderfully loaded truly - not a flower more -
- Lawrence S - nice place - little home with ---- and a sitting room - separate from the cabin - good food - Yuccas in ---- Stems 12 to 20 ft high - old stage station - R.R. brot an end to freighting now - 6 miles from Summit on which you look into the Mohave desert - Lawson & Capt. John in evening. -
