Biography

William Abraham Bell was born in Clonmel, Tipperary, Ireland, April 26, 1841, the son of Dr. William Bell, a London physician. William A. Bell received an M.B. at the University of Cambridge, but according to Marshall Sprague's Newport in the Rockies, he dropped medicine altogether soon after coming to the United States. Bell visited Colorado in connection with the Kansas Pacific survey of 1867 and met General William J. Palmer, with whom he formed a lifelong association. He became Vice President of Palmer's Denver & Rio Grande Railroad, and for many years was an agent for placing securities and bonds in England for Palmer.

Bell's book about the Kansas Pacific survey, New Tracks in North America, was published in 1869. He married Cara Georgina Whitmore Scovell in England in 1872. They and their children lived in Briarhurst Manor in Manitou Springs. In 1879, he was a founder of the Colorado Coal & Iron Company. Bell was associated with the founding and development of Colorado Springs, Manitou, Durango, and other towns in Colorado, and with the construction of the Antlers Hotel in Colorado Springs.

Bell was an early trustee of Colorado College. He made many contributions to the College, including a gift of forest land used by the Colorado College Forestry School.

In 1890, Bell and his children (three daughters and one son) returned to England to live. They continued to make frequent visits to Manitou. Bell left Colorado for the last time on March 1, 1920. He made an address January 28, 1920, at a dinner given to employees of the Denver & Rio Grande railroad at the Union station in Denver.

He died on June 6, 1921.

William A. Bell Papers, Part 2, 1871-1872, Ms 0306

Scope and Content

The collection consists of letters written to and from William A. Bell. They range in date from early 1870 to 1891 but are concentrated in the years 1871 and 1872. Most of the letters concern the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad and Bell’s other business ventures, including: The National Land Company; The Central Colorado Improvement Company; Porter, Bell, and Company; and The Colorado Cheese Company in Wet Mountain Valley.

The letters dealing with the formation of the Denver & Rio Grande Railroad show extensive planning for the construction of the railroad south of Denver. They also illustrate Bell’s friendship and partnership with General William J. Palmer and William S. Rosencrans (the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.) Many of the letters concern pooling money for the venture; others regard gathering supplies and support.

The collection also contains numerous personal letters written to Bell from his mother, father, and uncles as well as business peers. There are also letters written to Bell concerning the construction of Briarhurst, his mansion in Manitou Springs.

Additional references on Bell’s life and his business ventures are found in Marshall Sprague’s Newport in the Rockies and Herbert Brayer’s William Blackmore, A Case Study in the Economic Development of the West.
